The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York

Western New York artists are called to apply for the Canalside Mural Fest, a live painting celebration transforming Buffalo’s waterfront into a “living gallery.”

This two-day event honors the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, highlighting New York’s evolving culture and history.

Arts Services Inc. (ASI), with Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation and Buffalo Waterfront, will host the festival on July 11–12, 2026, with rain dates the following weekend.

Selected artists will paint original murals on 8’ x 8’ free-standing walls, each inspired by themes like place-based identity, community heritage, or social equity.

All creative disciplines are welcome, with preference for regional and Indigenous artists.

Participants receive stipends and an opportunity to sell artwork during the event—continuing Canalside’s tradition as a cultural hub.

Applications close May 13, 2026.

The NFL Draft is approaching, signaling a pivotal moment for athletes like Tyler Doty of the University at Buffalo.

Doty, a Gasport native and St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute alum honored as Western New York’s top high school lineman, never imagined himself on the verge of pro football.

Arriving at UB feeling “average,” he steadily transformed into one of the Mid-American Conference’s elite offensive linemen, earning All-MAC honors three times—unprecedented for UB.

Growing up in rural Niagara County shaped his grit, but Doty credits relentless hard work and team-first attitude for his rise.

His impressive Pro Day performance in March, marked by personal bests, fueled his confidence that the NFL is within reach.

Now, likely destined for free agency after the draft, Doty remains grateful and determined to seize whatever opportunity comes next.
